![]() ![]() Kanno is about the execution (as in the arrangement, the producing) and the way she gives life to music. The layers of thematic and feelings in everyone of her work, even pop songs, is pretty rare. And believe me, that's not the typical movie composer ability there. Kanno has a unique ability to convey strong and complex feeling in her arrangements. Now her real strength and particularity, is beyond that. Her work is indeed full of "parody" of many things. For example Watanabe from Cb will tell her "yeah i love that song from the beatles". Now, people she work with, ask her for things, and use references. She's a little lunatic (to not say autistic) and it al comes from god knows where you know. That's why she doesn't listen to ANY music outside of work I actually think Kanno is literally a music genius, in a way she has a pretty surreal ability to arrange and compose music, and she had that pretty early. She admitted in interviews that she unconsciously "record" everything she hears and put it in her work after, even elevator tunes. Now about the plagiarism matter, it's a little more complicated. I could go for hours but let's finish old school with that absolute master piece from Uncharted Waters ![]() OMG that track from CB the movie and this song from the same movie also kills me every time. I've heard somoene talk about Fincher's panic room as a burger cooked by the best chef in the world.Įnding theme from a NHK special documentary on China history ![]() While listen to Sakamoto: Pokeoto wo karanishite from Escaflowne Tower of Babel (Wich is an older instrumental version of an Escaflowne the movie song, Sora)Ĭhibikko Fooku from Shonen Alice (Sakamoto album) Theory of the Earth's Abyss (Turn a Gundam) Some of my favs tracks of her (hard to tell but hey.) Her most famous work is Cowboy bebop, but other good from her are Brain Powerd or GitS : SAC. Her Koei work ( an example, her own rearrangement), and more recently Napple Tale on Dreamcast, which has to be the most expensive ost ever for a video game at the time. The variety and complexity of her work is absolutely unparalleled.ĭon't forget she also made some of the best vg soundtrack in the past. I've been pretty much obsessed with Kanno for the last 10 years. It's time to think a little realistically. We're talking about a guy who wrote some prodigious songs with beautiful lyrics of love in at least over 100 songs - and people on the internet are up in arms over a woman who's done 1,000+? The whole situation kinda reminds me of Paul McCartney freaking the fuck out over thinking that he plagiarized Yesterday to the point where it continues to haunt him. Most of them the vocal songs - largely, and this is my own personal opinion, her weakest songs by default. Yet it seems that less than 5-10% of her library is being focused on in every single available thread of evidence on the internet. ![]() If 50% of her compositions were never attributed or acknowledged to someone else by Kanno herself, then I can safely understand where the tincan beaters of hate are coming from. I'm not trying to put a focus on you, more the general accusations, but if Miles Davis can cop a free pass as the master of jazz with two keynote albums of originality on his sheet, then I don't understand why the incessant witch hunt of Yoko Kanno. ![]()
